After every natural disaster citizens and businesses have to find a way to recuperate from the damage and how to improve things for the future. After Hurricane Sandy created havoc in New York and datacenter outages started hitting New York’s high tech scene, ZocDoc became much more serious about opening a new office in Arizona. They have chosen this Arizona because they want to ensure that they have continuity of operations even in the event of natural disasters. Arizona is the perfect new location because there are very few natural disasters in this area that would affect a tech company.
ZocDoc was founded in 2007 and is currently based out of New York City. ZocDoc is a free service that allows patients to find a nearby doctor or dentist who accepts their insurance. Patients can read ratings and reviews of every doctor and choose from a list that accepts their insurance and is in their area. One of the most used aspects of the site is checking doctors’ availability and booking appointments. By doing this, ZocDoc helps patients be seen in 24-72 hours. In an interview with Inc., ZocDoc’s CEO and founder, Cyrus Massoumi, states, “There’s a health care supply that goes underutilized because of an inefficient market.” He continues to speak about the recent and future changes in health care and explains this inefficiency with an example. He says, “A few years ago, Massachusetts got half a million new patients and no new doctors. Their wait times are now about 50 days. That’s what can happen nationally if we don’t change.” ZocDoc is attempting to fill this niche and cut down on inefficiency from canceled or no-show appointments by allowing people to check and make appointments online so that there is no waiting and immediate care. Another and the company’s most recent product is ZocDoc Check-In which allows patients to fill out paperwork online before their appointment and to download a Spanish-language version.
ZocDoc is also funded by many technology investors such as DST Global, Goldman Sachs, Founders Fund, Khosla Ventures, Jeff Bezos, Marc Benioff, and Ron Conway. These investments have reached $95 million. The company has also been featured in articles in Inc., Time’s 50 Best Websites, and the Today show. They have also been named one of the Best Places to Work in New York City by Crain’s New York for three years in a row, one of Modern Healthcare’s Best Places to Work in Healthcare for two years in a row, and one of Fortune Magazine’s 50 Best Small and Medium Workplaces. ZocDoc intends to keep standards high and prepare for the future with the opening of the new office in Arizona. While their location is not yet set, ZocDoc will be a great new addition to Arizona’s growing software economy.
