Twitter turns 8 and reminds us of our first tweet

Happy birthday to the blue bird as Twitter turns eight today! To celebrate it’s birthday, Twitter set up a mechanism for you to go and visit your first tweet called first-tweets.com. If you do plan to tweet out your first tweet, use #FirstTweets. We captured some first tweets from some familiar faces around the country.

Twitter has been recognized as having one of the biggest social impacts in the world-think about it, where else can you get realtime info, live action, calls to action and awesome hashtags all in one place. Truth be told, following the Twitter stream for the Oscars, Super Bowl and presidential race was just, as if not more, entertaining than the event itself. Twitter has also been recognized as a medium for change as it’s has been used as a tool to organize protests, aggregate public opinion, fuel lobbying efforts and fundraise.
According to USA Today, the top stories that hit Twitter in 2013 included: Presidential Inauguration #inaug2013, death of Nelson Mandela #Madiba, Boston Marathon bombing @bostonpolice, death of Margaret Thatcher #Thatcher, Bat Kid #SFBatKid and their own IPO #TwitterIPO.

For the top tweets, Twitter has the #YearOnTwitter where you can see the top trending hashtags for 2013 and previous years.
