The ASU Entrepreneurship and Innovation Group hosted their first 2013 Startup Bowl. The winner is given to the college that brings in the highest percentage of student participation into the 2013 Edson student venture program.
The Edson program provides funding, mentorship and office space to teams of students within all university disciplines. It provides an opportunity for students to develop and launch their innovative ideas.
Tracy Lea, Venture Manager said, “It’s exciting to see the level of commitment from the colleges across the university and it’s a testament to how entrepreneurship lives in every discipline.”
ASU President Michael M. Crow and Provost Elizabeth D. Phillips made an appearance to honor the Startup Bowl’s winning student, staff, faculty and administrator participants.
“ASU is a school that is committed to entrepreneurship,” Crow said. “[Entrepreneurship is] about bringing your ideas out…an idea in your head is just a thing…one has to take the idea from your head and find people to bring it to fruition.”
President Crow presented the Startup Bowl winner to the Dean of Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering Paul Johnson.
Johnson comments on the win, “For us, it’s a very important award. We’ve spent a lot of time over the last five years to inspire an entrepreneurial spirit, and the students and faculty have really responded to that. This recognition comes at a very special point in time for us and affirms the nurturing and sense of pride we’ve instilled in our students.”
Other awards given include:
Dean Amy Hillman of W.P. Carey School of Business received the Velocity Award. Sidnee Peck, Director of Entrepreneurial Initiatives, was noted for her efforts to help bring students into the program and fuel the entrepreneurial spirit.
Dean Chris Boone of the School of Sustainability received the Bootstrap Award. “We might be the smallest college but we are never short on big ideas,” Boone said.
Vice Provost and Dean Mitzi Montoya of the College of Technology and Innovation at Polytech campus received the Propeller Award.
The trash talking has already begun and these deans are ready to boost and inspire more entrepreneurial spirit at ASU and take home the 2014 Startup Bowl cup.
