Fifty four hours of ideas, teamwork, and startup knowledge is what you can expect from a Startup Tucson Startup Weekend. This weekend-long event is meant to help people turn ideas a viable business.

“This is a global event that happens all over the world and this is the 5th annual startup weekend here in Tucson,” Startup Tucson Operations Coordinator Courtney Fey said. “We have about 65 participants and about 20 mentors to help them form ideas.”

Mentors include members from Desert Angels, University of Arizona professors, entrepreneurs, city leaders, and entrepreneur supporters.

If you haven’t been to one of these events, participants pitch an idea on Friday, from there, teams will form around the ideas and these teams will participate in workshops and mentoring all weekend. On Sunday, each team is expected to have the basics of a company to present at a “startup Shark Tank” event where judges will provide feedback and choose a winner.

“A lot of times a lot of great ideas go undeveloped because people don’t know where to start, and they don’t have the correct tools to get it off the ground,” Fey said. “It’s one of the best learning tools you can do if you’re interested in startups in any way.”

The event will be held at CoLab Workspace from September 11-13. Registration is still open, and those interested can sign up here. Admission covers pre-events and six meals.

Startup Tucson is a nonprofit that promotes economic growth. They hold about 40 events per year, including monthly mixers.
