It’s a brutal morning when I can’t sleep. Most of the time, it’s my busy mind that is keeping me up or inhibiting my ability to go to sleep. Aside from that, my sleep is interrupted now and again by a child who also can’t sleep or a dog who has to suddenly pee at 3 a.m. While I haven’t chosen to join the four percent of Americans who turn to sleep aids to stay asleep, and can only consume so much coffee to counter the droopy eyes, I discovered the main difference between a good night, and great night, sleep came down to my blue-light exposure.

If you are someone like me who is surrounded by screens late at night and probably turn off your devices about five minutes before you want to go to sleep-researchers have found this isn’t the best habit for the overly tired.
According to a study by the American Medical Association, exposure to excessive light, especially blue-light at night, can disrupt or exacerbate sleep disorders, even reduce melatonin production (the hormone that helps you sleep). Experts have recommended to shut down electronics between 30 minutes to two hours before you go to bed so your body can prepare for sleep and build up the melatonin.
