What would your Google Doodle look like if you were asked to draw one? For students K-12, Google held the Doodle 4 Google contest across the United States to redesign the Google logo inspired by the theme “If I could invent one thing to make the world a better place…”
For one Valley student and finalist Tracy Zhang, a 9th grader from Desert Mountain High School, she could soon have her art on the Google homepage for millions around the world to see. Zhang was announced as one of the 50 state winners today at her school assembly and her Doodle will be displayed in an online gallery on the Doodle 4 Google website.
Zhang’s winning Doodle is called, “Natural Light-Powered Flying Car.” Her inspiration was to create a cleaner environment, end the oil crisis, and build transportation that would be quicker, easier, and definitely loads more fun! Essentially the Jetsons on eco power! Tracy’s Doodle was selected from over 100,000 submissions with ideas ranging from water purification to advanced robotics and nutrition solutions.
“The idea of a flying, natural-light powered car, really came to me when I thought about what could impact the planet the most,” said Zhang, “As cities rise, populations grow and the world becomes more globally connected, of course we would need massive amounts of energy to power this growth. So I had an idea of a new energy resource, natural-light power – power that comes from the light of the sun, stars, and moon. The idea of a flying car also fascinated me so I combined these two ideas to create my invention. I hope for this invention to not only help in transportation and traveling, but also to decrease pollution and make our planet greener.”
Tracy needs our help to win the contest as voters from around the country will determine the winner! Voting will be open from April 29 to May 9 on this site: http://www.google.com/doodle4google/vote.html, and the public vote will determine the five national finalists (one in each grade group).
Doodles will be grouped and judged by the following grade groups:
- Grades K-3
- Grades 4-5
- Grades 6-7
- Grades 8-9
- Grades 10-12
Google will announce the five National Finalists (1 per grade group), in an awards ceremony held at the Google Headquarters in California on May 21, 2014 and the winning student will work with Google’s team of professional doodlers to animate their doodle — for the first time ever!
The animated doodle will be displayed on the Google homepage on June 9. The winner will also take home a $30,000 college scholarship and his or her school will receive a $50,000 Google for Education grant towards the establishment and improvement of a computer lab or technology program.
