TechShop has landed in Chandler! It’s a membership-based, do-it-yourself workshop and fabrication studio, officially opens its new location in the ASU Chandler Innovation Center to the public on November 16.
Founded in October 2006 in Menlo Park, CA, TechShop houses more than $1 million worth of high quality machines, tools and software. A fun fact is that TechShop has been the birthplace for scores of successful product prototypes, including Square, Embrace, underwater submarine robots, bipedal robot legs, and many more.
TechShop has partnered up with Arizona State University (ASU) students to provide them a wide range of machinery, tools and software to turn their ideas into reality. They will also offer classes, workshops, instruction and meet-ups for people of all ages and skill levels.
“We are excited to partner with Arizona State University to pioneer a new model for integrating hands-on making into the teaching process,” said Mark Hatch, CEO of TechShop.
“These students have incredible talent and creativity, and we look forward to seeing the inventions and potential new companies that will result from this partnership. ASU’s partnership with TechShop demonstrates our commitment to expanding entrepreneurship and innovation opportunities within higher education and the community,” said ASU President Michael M. Crow.
To encourage students to use TechShop, ASU’s College of Technology and Innovation (CTI) will offer discounted memberships to students who are taking classes at the ASU Chandler Innovation Center.
“TechShop creates open access to fabrication and prototyping resources that will enrich the learning experience for our students and the lives of community members,” said Mitzi Montoya, dean of ASU’s College of Technology and Innovation.
To celebrate the opening, TechShop will host an open house on Saturday, November 16, 2013 from 11AM-4PM, come down and take a look!
