New on-demand ingredient service offers a twist of education – video

It happened again. The Barefoot Contessa made another delicious dish that I wanted to cook for the family, and this time it was the chicken pot pie, roasted carrots and garlic sautéed spinach. However, my excitement soon diminished after calculating the amount of time to shop, prep and cook the meal – forget it, mom is tired, let’s order take-out.

While more startups are finding ways to solve the same problem of “what’s for dinner” and shave off time devoted to home-cooked meals, on-demand ingredient delivery services such as BlueApron or Saffron Fix are growing in popularity.

Adding to the mix, founder Steven Sauder of Appetites launched his version of an on-demand ingredient delivery service, but with an educational twist. Instead of receiving a recipe card with a photo of the perfectly prepared dish, the Appetites app pairs each recipe with tutorial videos taught by professional and celebrity chefs who take the customer through step-by-step instructions from the raw to finished dish. The majority of recipes are completed in under 35 minutes.

Sauder paired up with Chef Becky Reams, who was a runner-up on Fox’s Master Chef. She has a BBQ series and teaches customers how to make her “Ultimate Burger” with Dill & Lemon Potato Salad, Skirt Steak with Paprika/Garlic Sauce and Goat Cheese Polenta and Roasted Chicken with Grapefruit and Spinach Salad. Delish.

Currently Appetites is offered in 10 metropolitan cities (Austin, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, Washington, D.C. as well as surrounding areas ) and continues to expand.

Their app offers over 200 recipes and once the user selects the dinner, ingredients will be delivered to the home within two hours. The average price point is $8-12 per person. The Appetites app is available on iTunes. Who’s hungry?
